Apple Pizza

Take a few apples and turn them into an unforgettable dessert pizza!

When most people think about apples and dessert, they probably jump straight to apple pie or apple crisp. But apple pizza has its own unique taste and texture that makes it distinct from other desserts. If you’re a fan of apples and you’re looking for new ways to use them, this recipe for apple pizza is definitely one you’ll want to try.

Making an apple pizza is remarkably simple, which is another reason this recipe was an instant hit the first time I tried it. All you have to do is pre-cook the apples in butter and sugar, scatter them on top of the pizza crust, and prepare the glaze that goes on top. By the time the pizza comes out of the oven, the apples will be warm, sweet, and fill the kitchen with a pleasing aroma that’s similar to apple pie. It will truly feel like eating a little slice of heaven.

If you have a little extra time, I recommend this homemade Pizza Dough recipe rather than using store-bought dough. You can definitely taste the difference if you make the dough yourself. Another option is to make a Cauliflower Pizza Crust.

Is Apple Pizza Healthy?

As you can probably imagine, apple pizza is a mixed bag from a health standpoint. Obviously, the inclusion of apples has a lot of nutritional value. Apples are a source of fiber, antioxidants, and a variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and potassium. In short, they are an important fruit to include in your diet. At the same time, the rest of the recipe includes a lot of butter and sugar, causing the amount of fat and calories in apple pizza to increase significantly. That makes this dessert pizza one that should be enjoyed in moderation.

The Right Type Of Apple

This recipe recommends using Honeycrisp apples for apple pizza, although there is some leeway based on your preferences. Honeycrisp apples have a firm texture and are known for their sweetness, which is why they work well on a dessert pizza. However, Granny Smith apples are also an option if you prefer more tart apples because they also have a firm texture. Cortland apples, meanwhile, have a better balance between sweetness and tartness. Fuji, Jonagold, and Pink Lady apples are also good options for making apple pizza. It all depends on your personal preferences and what apples are in season and available.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Any leftover apple pizza can be stored in an airtight container. In the fridge, it will stay good for 2-3 days. Feel free to eat it cold from the fridge or reheat it in the oven if you prefer to eat it warm.

How Do I Give This Pizza A Little Crunch?

Sprinkling some walnuts or chopped pecans on apple pizza can give it a little crunch and texture, although you don’t want to overshadow the apples.

Can I Make This Into A Savory Pizza?

Absolutely! For a little savory contrast, skip the sugary glaze and try adding a sprinkle of blue cheese or even some goat cheese, both of which will complement the apples well.

Serving Suggestions

The best way to complement a slice of apple pizza is with a scoop of ice cream. I suggest Cottage Cheese Ice Cream or Cookie Dough Banana Ice Cream. If you want to make dessert extra special, you may want to try Coconut Milk Ice Cream with Rum and Eggnog, which is gluten-free and vegan-friendly. Of course, making apple pizza for breakfast is also an option. If that’s the case, I suggest pairing the pizza with a Fruit Smoothie or a Green Smoothie. You can also try pairing apple pizza with Strawberry Yogurt for a more balanced breakfast.

1 premade thin pizza crust 9-12 inch4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened2/3 cup packed coconut sugar or brown sugarJuice of half a lemon3 Honeycrisp apples peeled and thinly sliced1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon1 cup powdered sugar1-2 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Place the premade thin pizza crust on a round baking sheet.
Add the butter, sugar, and lemon juice to a small pot on medium heat. Stir well as the butter and sugar melt together, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the apple slices and coat well in the mixture. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the apples.
Put the apples on the pizza crust in an even layer, being sure to scrape out all of the butter-sugar mixture onto the apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the topping is lightly browned.
While the pizza cools for about 5 minutes, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of milk to create a smooth glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the warm pizza, slice, and serve.
